Evan's Almighty

gregjaye had previously reviewed this movie. In this article Sam critiques the movie from a slightly different angle.

The movie, Evan Almighty, presents the concept that there is a personable God with whom we can speak and He speaks to us from scripture and apart from scripture. God enabled his chosen, Evan Baxter, to build an ark by providing the space, knowledge, and material. Communication with Evan Baxter was in such a way that he knew it was God speaking to him. He knew what he had to do and God equipped him to do it. A deadline was even established by which the project had to be completed. People outside of Evan’s immediate family were unwilling to help in any way, but the animals helped. Is it possible that animals are more in tune with God than some humans?

Evan Baxter is shown speaking face to face with the Almighty. This is rare. Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Jesus, Adam and Eve were perhaps the only recorded individuals who spoke face to face with God. As with Evan Baxter, who the people did not believe, so today Moses who enjoyed personal communication with God for forty years was and is not believed by many, then or now. Evan was able to receive these messages in the midst of other people and no one else had a clue as to what was happening.

It seems that God knew a dam was going to break. Congressman Long had been told it would never break. Yes, it was secure, just as the mighty Titanic was unsinkable. This is basic dam breaks, ships sink and only God knows when.

The person playing God did not seem to know his character very well. He stated God is “in everything.” Scripture relates that God is everywhere observing the evil and the good. This is not the same as saying God is in everything. He also said, “we are all God’s children.” This, too, is not true. Some people are the children of the devil, Satan. Morgan Freeman, the character who played God, also contended that we were to do “random acts of kindness. God doesn’t seem interested in randomness. He commands love for Himself and love for our neighbor. To love mercy, to act justly and to walk humbly with God consistenty is what He expects or requires from us. This begins by obeying the Gospel and believing in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Baxter was commended for doing the job. Isn’t this what life is all about, being commended by God at the time of standing before Him in judgment? This requires being born-again through faith in Jesus Christ.
