Evan Almighty (2007)

Do you want to watch an enjoyable, engaging, wholesome movie this summer? I usually wait the 18 months and rent or buy the DVD. However, when Dave Zanotti of the American Policy Roundtable and Public Square Radio Show, which I listen to as often as I can, made this movie a must-see recommendation, I knew that I had to watch it.. Furthermore, I was not at all disappointed in the Friday afternoon matinee presentation. I chilled in the theater on this muggy sizzling summer day.

Please see Evan Almighty which is sequel of sort to Bruce Almighty. Except for Morgan Freeman playing God, nothing else is similar between the two movies with the same surname. Bruce Almighty at best may be a 1 star out five. Bruce Almighty was all about Jim Carrey. Evan Almighty was all about the story. Evan Almighty is 5 times better!

I am not familiar with the actor who played the lead role of Congressman Evan Baxter, but I know Morgan Freeman, who played God (much better that Mr. George Burns did I might add), John Goodman, Roseanne Barr’s TV husband played the corrupt (what else is new?) Congressman Long and one of TV’s Gilmore Girls played Baxter’s wife, and Mr. Parker from the Pretender TV show, which is my all-time favorite TV show, played minor role as another Congressman.

Evan Baxter is a TV anchor from Buffalo NY who runs for and wins a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Baxter’s campaign slogan is “Change the World.” which as the movie progresses, he gets a chance to fulfill. We also get a glimpse at politicians (John Goodman's Rep. Long) at their worst.

It is a light-hearted comedy with a message (imagine that!). Anyone who regularly follows the machinations of the politics will thoroughly enjoy this movie. Above all it shows God in a positive light, so rare in these days of ACLU – “Americans” United for the Separation of Church and State” or the People for the “American” Way – persistently purging Him from the campus, government and the public square.

Without giving away more of the movie the movie involves the rookie Congressman, moving to Washington DC. As the plot progresses he comes to be referred to as the “New York Noah” by the main-stream media as he goes on to follow God’s direction. The movie reminded me of another of my favorite TV shows Joan of Arcadia, the teenager who talked to the various manifestations of God. Joan of Arcadia had a short two-year run, it was too good for American TV, I guess . . .

This is a must see movie for anyone interested in politics, a wonderful movie for the whole family. I’d make it required viewing for every American Christian and Christian families! Enjoy! People actually clapped at the end of the movie! How often does that happen and nobody left early. Be sure to stay during the credits for the incredible dance scene, too!
