Why is this guy writing about a Christmas movie in the middle of summer? The story of Christmas, the historic Biblical account of Jesus, is a 24/7, 365 message. I was in the video store on Saturday and could not find anything of interest and the Nativity Story in the new on video section caught my eye. I had not seen it previously.
I saw Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ. The Nativity Story and the Passion make nice complimentary bookends, the literal death and birth of the Savior of the world. The gist of the movie has to do with just a short two years before and immediately after the birth of the Messiah. It tells a well known story of the events surrounding His birth.
Mary, admirably and effectively played by Keisha Castle-Hughes, is fully human with fears and faith. Mary is visited by an angel, who informs her that she would conceive through a miraculous intervention by God the Holy Spirit. Joseph, likewise, is spoken to by an angel in a dream, who tells Joseph that Mary has conceived and will bear a Son. All of this frightens by of these simple, but godly people. Deep of personal character and resolve characterize this couple.
The scorn and looks of her friends and neighbors were captured as were the emotional highs and lows of the actors and actresses. A simple, honest portrayal of the greatest story ever told. The cinematography, the retelling of the greatest historical event of all time, and the sincere acting impressed me greatly. The pacing of the movie was good. Even the realistic costumes added to the movie.
I highly recommend this marvelous movie, which is not just for the Christmas season, but for any season. It is an excellent reminder of the humble circumstance surrounding the conception and birth of God incarnate, God with us. It tells of the infinite love and perfect plan of Almighty God to redeem fallen man.
The movie begins and ends with scenes based on King Herod’s plan to exterminate the coming King of the Jews, who was a threat to his own throne. I could not but think of America’s own atrocity, abortion, the inhumane slaughter of our sons and daughters for our own self-centered, selfish purposes.
The Nativity Story is fit for all ages chronological and historical. Buy or rent the video and be graced by God’s timely and timeless message of love.
