John Freshwater Supporters Rallied Sunday

(Mount Vernon, Ohio) Hundreds of Mount Vernon’s citizens showed up at the Public Square on a chilly, windy, and sunny Sunday afternoon for a prayer rally to support science teacher John Freshwater. The Mount Vernon Square is a large circular park in the heart of the town. Much of the square was filled with supporters, both from Mount Vernon and from other Ohio locations. The rally included singing, speaking and prayer.
.

Mr. Freshwater has been a teacher for 21 years in the Mount Vernon City School District. Last year he received an award as Teacher of the Year, but he has been targeted for his Christian faith by the Mt. Vernon City School Board, which is now being advised by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Mr. Freshwater was informed by the school board that he must remove from his desk his personal Bible that he has had sitting there for 21 years. Mr. Freshwater did comply with a number of other demands by the school board, but said that his own personal Bible is off-limits, and that the school board has no right dictating to him or any other teacher this kind of demand. Freshwater is currently being investigated and monitored while an assessment is being made of his future in the Mount Vernon school system.

Bob Burney, a Columbus area minister and WFRD radio talk show host served as the master of ceremonies. Speakers included Reverend Dan Whisner of the Church at Chapel Hill and Ohio Legislative Watch, Reverend Donald Matolyak, Pastor of Trinity Worship Center (John Freshwater’s church), Ohio State Congressman Thom Collier spoke, and John Freshwater, present and on “stage – a flat bed truck” with his wife and three children. Closing the meeting was Chris Long, Executive Director of the Ohio Christian Alliance, based in Akron, Ohio.

Steve Townsend, a local citizen and father, whose three children have been or are being taught by John Freshwater, spoke for a few minutes. His youngest daughter is in his class this year and has been inspired by how he encourages kids to be their best. His son is now a teacher in middle school. His son has testified as to Mr. Freshwater’s commitment to the student and a consistent encouragement to his fellow peers. He ended by saying, “I leave you with this, our students are safe with John Freshwater.”

Bob Burney related that despite this adversity, God is using it for His glory. He said that the fact that nearly 2/3 of the student body brought bibles to school a couple of weeks ago in support of Mr. Freshwater. In addition, the fact that hundreds of people showed up in support of Mr. Freshwater filling the Public Square singing "How Great Thou Art" shows that God can use even the worst of situations.

Thom Collier, Ohio State House Representative for the 90th District, which encompasses Mount Vernon shared why he was at the rally. He said that he was at the rally because he shares a view from a unique perspective as a public official, a public figure, a believer in Christ. He wanted to share a little of the big picture. He said, “Because I believe when the smoke clears, the investigations are complete, we will still have one major question that lingers before us in the community and as a society. Can a teacher have a Bible, or a Koran for that matter, on the corner of their desk? And for the record, yes, I have a Bible on the corner of my desk in the (Ohio) State House. ” He raised his Bible in his right hand, like Charlton Heston did his rifle at the NRA convention, and said, “Out of my cold dead hands.”

Freshwater spoke of his mission trip to China, to the area of China that was recently hit by that devastating earthquake. His youngest daughter, Jordan, was only two years old at the time. Mr. Freshwater recalled how sitting on his shoulders Jordan sang the B.I.B.L.E. song for the Chinese church audiences, who requested the song at church meetings. The crowd joined Jordan in singing the children's favorite:

The B-I-B-L-E
Yes, that's the book for me
I stand alone on the Word of
God
The B-I-B-L-E

Closing the meeting was Chris Long, Executive Director of the Ohio Christian Alliance, based in Akron, Ohio. His organization also supports the stand Freshwater has taken.

Thanks for your update on the local situation. Our group, the Tecumseh Project, brings Christians together in unity to fight Christian oppression in the U.S. and in Western Europe. (http://www.tecumsehproject.com)

When we heard about John's case, we began an online petition supporting him, which now has over 130 signers from over 40 states and Canada. Some of the comments posted are very touching. http://www.gopetition.com/online/18801.html

So, thank you to John for standing up for Christian freedom, and rest assured that we will make these petitions available to public officials in Ohio. Thank you!

I don't think the school board is being advised by the ACLU. No one has ever said that. I would like to see where you get that information.

The ACLU supports the Board of Education's decision. The Board may have been intimidated by a threat of a lawsuit by this less than stellar group of rabble rousers - the ACLU. They at least support the decision of the Mount Vernon School Board. I would not be at all surprised if they have or are currently advising the Board.

Here is an article found on the Ohio ACLU website:

A Mount Vernon teacher bid to promote the Bible in his classroom infringes on separation of church and state.

Mount Vernon Middle School science teacher John Freshwater refused to move his Bible from his classroom desk after school officials requested that he do so. At a rally on Public Square on Wednesday, he defended his right to display his personal Bible as a constitutional right. If he’s looking for the American Civil Liberties Union to defend him, he could be disappointed.

The American Civil Liberties Union doesn’t agree. As a public school employee, the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and religion don’t necessarily convert inside the classroom. The ACLU of Ohio supports the Mount Vernon Board of Education’s request that Freshwater keep his Bible out of sight when children are in the classroom.

“This really should have an easy resolution,” said Christine Link, executive director of American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio. “The courts have recognized that our teachers have a special position and they can’t use their post to promote [a specific religion].”

Link said that as a citizen, the ACLU would defend a teacher’s right to his or her beliefs outside of the classroom. However, inside the school it becomes a different scenario altogether.

“The relationship [between teacher and student] is special,” Link said. “The teacher is a hyper-authority figure and they can’t promote religious beliefs or even political views.”

As a teacher in a public school system, Link suggests that Freshwater put his Bible away.

“If it’s in a desk, locker or in the teacher’s lounge, it would be fine,” Link said. “It is not permissible [to display his Bible] at work. You have to pay the piper when you are at work and follow the rules of your employer. [As a] public employee, [a teacher] has less rights to proselytize their religion.”

Link went on to repeat a position that has been brought up in many conversations throughout the county in regard to the subject.

“If it is all OK with the Bible, would it be OK if the Quran was on his desk?” she asked.

When asked if the school board should proceed with a deadline for Freshwater to remove his Bible, Link said the ACLU would not get involved, but cautioned that if the situation is not quickly resolved, it could end up being “traumatic and expensive.”

The board’s request to have Freshwater remove his Bible from students’ view was correct, according to Link.

“The school system is doing exactly the right thing,” she said. “It is actually acting in a way that is protecting them from a lawsuit from the ACLU; and if not from us, from some other group. They are acting in a way that is responsible. They are on the right path.”

In a conversation with Board President Ian Watson on Friday, Watson told the News that the board was only asking that Freshwater put his Bible inside his desk when students are in his classroom. Watson said the situation was “not a Bible thing, but an employee thing.”

    […]

She said the school board does not oppose religion, but that it is “protecting the establishment of religion in schools,” as deemed by the U.S. Constitution.

  4. So lets talk about his burning a cross on a students arm. Is this the sort of 'teaching' we need?

    Thank you for your comment.

You should not believe everything you read in the main stream media. Often they are known to fabricate the truth (lie).

Freshwater has been accused of "branding" kids. He did no such thing. He will have his day in court.

I wonder if the MSM will give him as much coverage after his exoneration as they did the accusation.
