Late Night Takes: Congressional Haircutting or Not

Late Night Jokes

The Tonight Show With Jay Leno

The U.S. Senate is now fighting to keep open the Senate barber shop. It loses $350,000 a year. Do you know what that makes it?  (That makes it) the most successful government program ever. It’s losing only $350,000 a year.

This joke is courtesy of NewsMax.com which periodically sends out an email compilation of late night jokes, few of which are worth repeating . . . this was the exception.

In America, is a penny saved still a penny earned?

A penny saved is a penny earned - Benjamin Franklin quote

"A penny saved is a penny earned," the essence of the original proverb according to one source means, “Money that you save is more valuable than money that you spend right away. It is good to save money.” This truism or truth, like traditional man-woman marriage, which has stood the test of time, is under attack today in America.

However, according to a tweet I read this morning by @DavidJones740, that reliable truth may now be passé. President Barack Obama and his leftist cohorts are succeeding in transforming America. David Jones tweeted that the above idiom no longer fits here in America; it has morphed  into something different, it has been replaced, it has transformed into the following reality:

“A penny saved is no longer a penny earned. It is a government oversight.”

The government obviously accepts this new interpretation. It acts as if it is starved for more taxes, for more revenue so it can redistribute America’s wealth as it sees fit. The government and those in power need additional resources in order to continue to reward its supporters, crony capitalists, and the Low Information Voters so critical to maintaining its power.

All money, all rights belong to the state, the government. It is the sole diviner or distributor of rights, phones, food stamps, and other bennies. Many of its citizens also have deliberately or ignorantly also accepted it. They have sold their soul, not to the company store because it has been closed, but to their new idol or god, the government leviathan.

I was so impressed with the profound truth found in the tweet this morning that I posted it on my favorite on-line forum, Cleveland.com Politics Forum this morning. It was removed from the forum within an hour! Why? Did it offend those protectors of the liberal agenda? Was some other reader offended by this truth? I believe that that statement was censored by some liberal or truth-denier.

What a shame, because that simple tweet expressed so well a powerful truth. The fact that truths like this and even certain news items that may shed a bad light on the Leftist Agenda are getting ignored, unreported, or censured is why the number of Low Information Voters is growing. The Low Information Voter is being nurtured by the powers on the Left including the main stream media and other destroyers of American values. That is exactly why I re-posted it here on AGoodChoice…! The truth needs to get out.

Portman: A Painful Admission or a Pitiful Betrayal of Principle?

One of my two Senators, neither of which is worth a plug nickel, Rob Portman is a McCain-Romney-Lugar Republican. You spell that R-I-N-O!  George Voinovich, Portman’s Predecessor was a RINO, too. One characteristics of RINOs is that they change their minds and ‘convictions’ almost as much as babies’ diapers need changed. Their promises and their convictions are also full of it…

Well, Senator Portman did it this time. He finds out that his son is a homosexual. So that revelation ‘forces’ him to change his mind in Romneylike fashion. Flip flop, flip flop like a fish out of water… In a tweet earlier this evening I used the words “unprincipled” and “selfish” in describing Portman’s position reversal on the same-sex “marriage” issue. Where is his courage? Where is his conviction? Maybe he never had any true convictions. He may be wishy-washy, just like the “conservative” George W. Bush spending like a liberal much of his time in office.

The following is a press release that I thought captured the essence of what the wayward senator did by betraying traditional, sacred, and biblical marriage because of his “love” for his son.  What his son really needed was tough love, to remind him that homosexuality is an immoral, unnatural, unhealthy chosen course of behavior and life style.  Unfortunately Portman is too typical of the permissive parent who chooses to ignore truth and principle.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Traditional Values Coalition president Andrea Lafferty issued the following statement in reaction to Ohio Senator Rob Portman's recent repudiation of his stance against gay marriage in reaction to his son's homosexual preferences:

These past few days have been very painful ones for me.

Earlier this week one of my children came to me and told me something which was shocking.

He is a drunk driver and has been driving drunk regularly since college.

I have taken several days to reflect on this and I have decided to reverse my earlier opposition to drunk driving.

My child is a drunk driver and I love him. It is a part of his identity, who he is.

I have reflected on all of this, consulted Scripture (the story of Jesus changing water into wine when the wedding he was attending in Cana ran dry is particularly relevant) and decided that drunk driving is a generational issue. Younger people take a much different view of drunk driving than older people.

Therefore, today I am reversing my opposition to drunk driving. My child has caused me to revisit a decision which, up until now, had been based simply on morality.

My child is a drunk driver. That has personalized the issue for me and taken me above the whole discussion of the morality of it. It is now personal with me.

In addition, I would like to say that drunk driving will make all of us stronger drivers. Think of how much more interesting driving will be in the future if more people have the freedom to drive drunk. It will sharpen the defensive driving skills of the rest of us.

"This unreleased press statement follows the same twisted, self-serving logic that several public officials have used in explaining their switch from opposing homosexual marriage to favoring it.

"If you remember nothing else from this exchange, remember this: our children are learners and unable to determine morality and then hand it down to their parents and other impressionable adults. This is one factor in why our culture is so morally upside down!

"This whole line of argument suggesting that opposition to homosexual “marriage” is a personal and “generational” matter is equally silly.

"There are absolutes. There is right and there is wrong. There are objective truths. A civilization which has no governing principles or laws is doomed to collapse. That is the soul of conservatism.

"The tough part of being a parent is telling one of those young souls whom we have been charged with raising that he or she is wrong. But because it is tough that doesn’t mean that we are excused from doing it or we can delegate our responsibility to a teacher or “the village” or some other entity.

"Parents hold the primary responsibility for the upbringing of their children. Parents are fully capable of still loving a child who is wrong.

"American parents hold the power to begin the process of reversing this dangerous downward trend. Our children look to us for direction and we owe them more than a collective shrug.

"I wish no harm to either Senator Portman or his son but they are wrong.

"And Senator Portman’s attempt to use his position in the Senate to affect the future path of our culture and the lives of other Americans compounds the wrong.

"Being a good parent is infinitely more difficult than being a Senator or President. And telling someone you love that he or she is wrong is the most difficult part of that difficult job.

"A nation which recognizes this is on the road to a vast spiritual recovery."

(Please Note: The introduction to this article is satire. Drunk driving is immoral. I abhor it. I also believe homosexuality is immoral and sinful.)

Give Us a Balanced Budget, or We Get Economic Death

There was an article today that I saw from the Alternet.org website, “Why America Doesn't Want "Bipartisan" Budget Agreements.” I thought a more apropos title for an article on the budget would be either, “Why President Obama Doesn't Want 'Bipartisan' Budget Agreement” or “Why the Democrats Don't Want Any Budget At All!”

Low Information Voters, the Democratic Party and a number of miserably moderate Republicans may not want "Bipartisan" budget agreements, but many Americans do. They want a budget. They want a balanced budget. Most rational, thinking Americans want to put a leash on the wildly expanding wayward government and a governor on its wanton spending.

President Barack Obama wants no budget cuts. He has done everything he can to create, to manufacture another crisis using the agreed upon Sequestration. He has deliberately engineered those measly cuts (2.5% in rate of spending) to hurt the most people. He wants to be sure that when any fecal material resulting from the Sequester reductions hits the fan he wants to be sure the GOP to take the hit.

Pure and simple, Dear Leader wants a Democratic House in 2014 and wants to place Politburo Princess Pelosi, San Fran Nan, back in the cat bird seat. He wants to finish what he started.

He wants to complete the unraveling of the foundations that built America. Plainly, the Great Campaigner is playing politics with the economy. This is not good for the economy. Not only that, but his failed socialistic economic policies are contributing to the snail paced barely discernible economic ''recovery.'

Senate Leader Harry Reid wants no part of submitting any kind of budget. The shyster Senator Reid has avoided providing a budget as if it were leprosy. He hasn't submitted a budget for four years. To submit a budget would require making hard choices that will affect some program or some Democratic constituent.

No, the Democrats are happy with the baseline budgeting that is ratcheting up the deficit. They want more taxes, they want more spending, they want more government, period, end of the story. They want no part of making choices ... except, of course, for allowing women to choose to abort their children! That is the only choice that matters to the Democrat Party elite.

Stop Kasich's Murderous Medicaid Expansion

From Citizens for Community Values:

Ohio ProLife Action - No Medicaid Expansion
Federal Monies Attached to Anti-Life Policies
March 8, 2013--FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ohio ProLife Action Statement on Ohio Participation in Federal Medicaid Expansion

Ohio Pro-Life Action is concerned that Ohio not accept federal monies which are attached to anti-life policies and regulations, nor encourage the federal government to incur greater debt to fund this expansion of federal control over Ohio citizens and their health care decisions.

Whereas, those states that participate in federal Medicaid expansion will be governed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) individual mandate requiring individuals to obtain insurance, thus legislating increased Medicaid recipients subject to the so-called HHS Mandate and entrenching Medicaid in these states as an arm of the federal government...1,2

Whereas, Medicaid has covered for years, under states' limited discretion, the same measures that citizens are protesting in the HHS Mandate as a violation of conscience--surgical abortions (in Ohio in restricted cases),3 contraceptives, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilizations... 4,5,6

Whereas, Medicaid expansion will expand these tax-funded practices to the underprivileged, which not only violate the conscience rights of many taxpayers, but are elective and medically unnecessary procedures and drugs...

Whereas, leading abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, is a recipient of Medicaid funding for so-called "family planning" measures,7 and funds for non-abortion procedures frees an abortion provider for its other programs....

Ohio ProLife action calls upon Governor John Kasich, the Ohio House of Representatives, and the Ohio State Senate to decline Ohio participation in federal Medicaid expansion and work instead for Medicaid reform for best use of taxpayer funds and essential medical care for the underprivileged.

Is Capitalism or Socialism Best for America?

I read an article by socialist Noam Chomsky: Can Civilization Survive Capitalism? Capitalism as it exists today is radically incompatible with democracy.” I completely disagree where this author is coming from, the far left. Below are a few comments I made to his article:

“Can Civilization Survive Capitalism?” A more pertinent question is, “Does America survive Obama’s socialist transformation?” Socialism has never worked anywhere; it’s insane to think it will work in America in the 21st century. Socialist fiascos lay on top of history’s ash heap: Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Greece, Spain, Cambodia, Uganda … Free enterprise and capitalism built America. It will also restore America, if America survives Obama the next four years and conservative principles and leadership eventually win the day.

I disagree with the author, “the most critical immediate problem that civilization faces: environmental catastrophe.” Besides, man-caused global warming is a proven hoax. The most critical immediate problem America faces is economic collapse due to unsustainable entitlements, annual trillion dollar deficits, ever mounting debt, uncontrollable, wasteful credit-driven spending. And the lack of will on the part of both political parties to do anything about it! If America loses its way, the world will follow suit.

When Government Spending is Out-of-Control

Someone wrote, "Actually, to avoid economic collapse and recession spending is needed." That may be true, but not government spending. Government gets its revenue from the taxpayer. It has no money of its own (unless it prints it!) It produces nothing. It takes money from the private sector. Government thwarts economic growth. Government stifles the private sector and thereby economic recovery with its regulations and taxes.

What is needed is allowing the private sector to grow, to create real jobs and with those jobs comes real recovery. The government needs to get out of the way of the free enterprise system. Lower taxes, less regulation, less government would produce more economic recovery! Government should be helping the private sector, instead of hurting and retarding it.

Everything the government does is generally wasteful and inefficient. Look at the BMV in most states... Look at the promises made about ObamaCare: lower premiums, reducing healthcare costs, reducing the Debt. Wrong, wrong and wrong. Just the exact opposite has occurred and will continue to occur if not stopped. Hopefully the GOP in the House will have the guts to stop its funding...

No, government is not the solution to most problems, economic or otherwise, government is too often itself the problem! Thank you Ronald Reagan for your wisdom …

Congress Austerity and Budget are not Four Letter Words

Congressman Connie Mack's “Penny Plan”, is a plan which will reduce the budget (when Harry Reid finally produces one!) 1% for each expenditure across-the-board. In 7-8 years the budget would be balanced. This is the best solution for long-term economic recovery and stability.

Also, it would be helpful to eliminate base-line budgeting and adopt zero-based budgeting making each department and area justify each expenditure. Programs should be eliminated that are no longer effective.

Entire departments, like the EPA and the Department of Education, should be scaled back or eliminated. Force the government to do its primary job, national security. Secure the borders.

Austerity is not a four letter word.

Get the government out of the way and let the private sector breathe and thrive. Now the government unwisely stifles the economy. They say they are here to help, but they are doing the opposite; they hinder. They hinder through burdensome taxes and regulations.

When does a human being become a person?

I had an online discussion with a person regarding abortion and what one would term the “product of conception.” I call it a baby, a human being, a person, from its very inception. My antagonist friend stated, “Just because you call something a baby, doesn't make it so. A person is not the meat. It is the personality, which only develops gradually after birth.” So when does the one become a person? Apparently to the secularist it is when the child develops his or her personality. That is, frankly, hogwash. Here is what I wrote in response:

It is a scientific fact, you, I, and every human being, that we were once a fertilized egg, and over time we developed physically, emotionally, mentally prior to, and subsequent to birth. The developing human being is a person. As the person develops and matures, so does the personality. A human being is still a person, no matter how small, no matter at what stage of development, inside or outside the womb. You cannot distinguish, other than at conception, when a person is a person.

The thing that distinguishes man from animals is the soul, the human nature that we all have. Talk about deniers of truth and reality! The soul can be defined as “A person's moral or emotional nature or sense of identity.” Animals have a limited (if any) capacity to think and are driven primarily by instinct and self-preservation, whereas man can think and reason conceptually. Man can create, animals cannot.

Like it or not, believe it or not, man was created in the image of God. We are the crown of His creation. He designed each of us to have free will and a conscience, unlike the rest of the animal kingdom. We can choose between right from wrong. We can either accept or reject Him.

Sequester, a TEA Party Plot?

Ricocheting Robert Reich Raising the Roof or the Debt Ceiling?

It was according to an Alternet.org article, "The Sequester as a Tea Party Plot, Sequestration grew out of a strategy hatched soon after they took over the House in 2011," written by not-so- rapid, the rickety ricocheting Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor and current college indoctrinator (professor). I made the following comment in that article:

Robert, Robert, Robert, you are wrong, wrong, wrong...

Mr. Reich, in your baffling words, the Tea Party Movement goal is "to undermine the government of the United States, to destroy much of its capacity to do the public’s business, and to sow distrust among the population." Nothing could be further from the truth, apparently something you are adverse to. Here are the six guiding principles of one of the most respected (in my humble opinion), Tea Party groups, the Tea Party Express:

(1) No more bailouts
(2) Reduce the size and intrusiveness of government
(3) Stop raising our taxes
(4) Repeal Obamacare
(5) Cease out-of-control spending
(6) Bring back American prosperity

These are radically different in philosophy compared to what apparently drives the current President's policies and actions including:

*Bailouts to his wall street and capitalist cronies and union supporters;
**Greatly increasing the size and scope of the centralized government;
***Being hell-bent on raising income taxes supposedly and unfairly on the rich,
but ultimately on all Americans;
****Ramming ObamaCare through Congress and Cramming it down the throats of
Americans, like it or not;
*****Year after year spending a trillion dollars more than available revenues;
and
******Impoverishing more and more Americans - the welfare, food stamp, and
unemployment rolls are dramatically increasing due to this president's economic
policies...

Sequestration was the President's idea, Robert. Is your short-term memory failing?

You actually said, “Tea Partiers use fear and anger in their war against the government – blaming the anemic recovery on government deficits and the government’s size, and selling a poisonous snake-oil of austerity economics and trickle-down economics as the remedy.” Yet, in the past few weeks “Fear and anger” were the precise tactics employed by the President and key members of his Administration in ginning up support for his failed anti-sequestration campaign.

Since when is living within one’s means considered “poisonous snake-oil of austerity economics”? What universe do you live in Robert? Have you spent so much time in Washington that you have completely lost your bearings?

In response to my comment, someone wrote that the TEAparty movement is a "complete astro-turf movement"? My comeback was:

The Tea Party Movement is made up of groups of patriots in communities across the country which are not controlled by Dick Armey or anyone else's army. They are citizens disgusted with he direction that both moderate George "Medicare Part D" Bush and the radical Barack "ObamaCare" Obama are taking this nation. They want sanity returned to Washington.

Both the Democrats and many Republicans, including much of its leadership, have succumbed to a seemingly incurable spending addiction. The only cure is purging the White House and Congress of these derelicts. Since they refuse to acknowledge their addiction, there is no hope for them. They must go. They must be replaced with men and women who have a balance budget mindset and are willing to make the hard decisions despite the political implications...

Another critic of my comments typed, "Federal spending has gone down under Obama, but they don't let reality get in the way of your thinking."  In turn I argued:

What???? Obama is spending more than a TRILLION DOLLARS annually more than the government receives in taxes. Are you kidding me? What kind of math are you using?

Mr. Obama and Congress (Dems and GOP) have a severe spending addiction. Look at the freak-out when the Obama-Proposed and Congress-Agreed Sequester mandated mostly spending reduction (not the necessary hard-core cuts) went into effect. We are talking 2%, which is pittance compared to what is needed to balance the budget. Our payroll taxes were raised by 2%, but there was no outcry by Obama and company. Limit spending rate of growth and cuts by the same amount and another Oblama  MANUFACTURED CRISIS happens...

My critics continued with comments like this, “"The deficit stems from Americans' unwillingness to PAY FOR WHAT THEY GET."” How did I answer that claim?

Then why not let the government stop giving us what we don't want?

·         We don't want stifling regulations.

·         We don't want energy policies that discourage domestic production of our natural resources.

·         We don't want funding of liberal propagandist radio and TV (PBS + NPR).

·         We don't want funding of baby-killing Planned Parenthood...

·         We don't want a Fast and Furious department of justice who won't protect our rights or pursue real criminals.

·         We don't want a country who allows illegal aliens to have benefits, while contemplating cutbacks of benefits for citizens who are seniors...

·          We don't want to continue to give foreign aid to our enemies, especially those that don't allow religious freedom for all like Egypt, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia...

·         We don't want our President repeatedly going on million dollar vacation flaunting his extravagance in the face of out-of-work Americans... when he purports to care so much for his fellow countrymen.

Please government stop being a nanny state. Focus on your job 1, national security, at which you are failing miserably... Our borders are not secured. We appease rather than oppose our Islamic - individual and state - terrorist enemies. We cut our military and not the fat bureaucracy.

The last comment from the article I want to address was one made by lenzy, “I don't see one tea party goon complaining in the comments in the story about ridiculous tax loopholes."

Good point, lenzy.

The income tax system needs to be reformed. I would like to close all the loopholes and I would like to see a flat 10-15% income tax on everyone. Or, I would like to see some across-the-board "fair tax." Obama wants fairness, what would be fairer than this tax?

FairTax.org describes FAIR TAX as "A national sales tax that treats every person equally and allows American businesses to thrive, while generating the same tax revenue as the current four-million-word-plus word tax code. Under the FairTax, every person living in the United States pays a sales tax on purchases of new goods and services, excluding necessities due to the prebate. The FairTax rate after necessities is 23% and equal to the lowest current income tax bracket (15%) combined with employee payroll taxes (7.65%), both of which will be eliminated."

The fair tax or something similar would streamline the revenue side of the budget equation. The expenditure side of the budget equation should be dealt with using Representative Connie Mack's 'Penny Plan' which calls for a 1% across-the-board reduction in all government expenditure for a period of 7-8 years until a balanced budget is reached.

This 'Penny Plan' could be combined with elimination of base-line budgeting and adoption of a zero-based budget approach. Every time the budget is done (which the Dems have made sure it has not been done for the last 4 years) every expenditure and program should be reviewed and justified before being included in the new budget. Further every department in the government should justify its existence or be shut down. For example, I believe that the EPA and the Department of Education, and much of the Department of Homeland Security should be scaped.

Yours,

one tea party goon...

That Obnoxious Tea Party Ain't Dead Yet?

There was another provocative article on Alternet.org this morning. The title of this inaccurate and exaggerated attack piece is, “The Obnoxious Tea Party Leaders Have Vanished from the Political Stage -- Palin, Beck, DeMint, Paul, Bachmann... Poof! Every single prominent Tea Party leader has either lost their job or abandoned being a voice of the movement.” The word “Obnoxious” got my attention. I thought of Senator Chuck Schumer, Diane Feinstein, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Now that is obnoxious!

You want obnoxious? Chuck Schumer is your man!

Is that wishful thinking, Alex?

The TEA Party movement represents most Americans’ positions on the issues. Unfortunately, the number of low information voters is growing and have been manipulated by a corrupt government-influenced education system and a biased media to fear these patriots.
The media viciously continues to marginalize, ridicule and smear the leaders that you mention in your article. A good example is Gov. Sarah Palin, who was targeted for destruction as soon as she stepped on the national stage. Fearing a strong conservative female, the left using all means at its disposable, attacked her mercilessly. She singlehandedly saved John McCain from a worse defeat than he otherwise would have had. She gave voice to a great many people. Her popularity rivaled that of Dear Leader. To a large extent the left has helped to damage her.
As for Jim DeMint, he is still a leader in the movement. He may not have as high a profile as he once did, but is working behind the scenes to clarify message and educate the public of what conservatism is, to counter the lies and distortions of the Left. He will continue to impact the movement.
Glenn Beck, like Jim DeMint, is or will be doing a lot of in-depth teaching.
The message that former Senator DeMint is not “trying to clarify that "the Left" is the problem." But the message is the conservative principles such as fiscal responsibility, limited government, strict interpretation of the constitution, etc… That is the message that needs to get to the American voters. That message is not getting through to Americans today, to a large extent because of the mainstream media today.

The past two GOP nominees for President were moderates at best with no conservative credentials. They neither believed, nor did they articulate the conservative message very well. That message is what will win the day... That is why the Republican establishment is as big an obstacle as the Democrat Party... to the conservative, Tea Party movements.

Unlike Barack Obama and John Boehner, Glenn Beck is a FORMER, a RECOVERED addict. Both of the aforementioned REMAIN heavily dependent on spending. They are spending addicts, proven by their action and inaction...

The Tea Party is evolving. It is not dead. It is not dying. It has not gone away! If America survives the next two to four years under Premier Obama, you will hear loudly from the Tea Party and likeminded candidates in 2014 and 2016.
