“Waging War on Evolution”, A Rebuttal

Mr. Paul A. Hanle in his Washington Post (Sunday 10/1/06) article “Waging War on Evolution” concludes it by writing, “We must teach science, not religion, in the science classroom.” I agree, theology (the study of God) is the first basic science students need to master. All science is derived from the fact of God’s existence. The number one reason for studying science is to understand God and His creation better.

"Wisdom begins with the fear of God." In Hanle’s article he mentioned that one of his French student’s questioned how biotechnology could be taught in the United States without a belief in evolution, which the French student implied was lacking here. That observation is understandable coming from the French. In the French Revolution Divine Revelation was rejected in favor of human reasoning. As a result God was forgotten, and the country of France became secular humanistic. Evolution is basic in the religion of secular humanism. The forefathers of the United States, on the other hand, believed in Divine Revelation and relied on Divine help form the Creator (the Lord Jesus Christ) to gain independence from Great Britain and to succeed as a sovereign nation. Today compare which of the two nations to see which is the greater.

Mr. Hanle states, “Evolution is the cornerstone principle of biology”. This is a bold face, flat out lie. He further asserts, “There is no serious scientific debate”. Of course not, evolution is neither science, nor is it provable, nor is it reproducible, and has no truth from which to reason. So then, how can you debate? It is wishful thinking of those who desire an evil lifestyle with no conscience, to tell them that they are doing wrong and are accountable to the Creator.

Mr. Hanle further writes, “The evolution of the human eye from a series of random mutations, for example, is indeed difficult to understand”. He is saying that what you can’t understand in evolution you accept as true anyway with no proof of evidence to the truth. The eye is a system that must be fully in place with all of the parts working correctly in order for the eye to function. Just as if you find a nut threaded on to a bolt you know instinctively that it didn’t get there by chance. Mutations are normally harmful to the plant or animal in which it takes place. To think that a multitude of mutations would produce an eye is an insult to one’s intelligence. If you have a cable TV just try refusing to pay your bill because the picture on the TV is only there by chance and not intelligent design. The fact that America exists is based on the knowledge that creation by the Creator is sufficient.

Where does Mr. Hanle arrive at this declaration, “This war (on evolution) could decimate the development of U.S. scientific talent? Is he saying that if talented scientific students don’t believe in evolution that they will be denied jobs, promotions, and tenure? Yes, this is exactly what he is saying, “Lagging near the bottom in math skills and performing worse in science and it will only worsen if students come to regard evolution as questionable or controversial.” Since when do math skills have anything to do with evolution? You do not have to know anything about evolution to do chemistry or biology or any other science. Is Mr. Hanl saying that the tests have questions on evolution and what you think about it? If you don’t agree with evolution then you do poorly on the test? So something unscientific (evolution) has been inserted into the tests to disqualify the truly scientific from doing well on the exams. So the exams are really a fraud and the people using them are really fraudulent.

Yes, this is the case. Mr. Henle says so. “Thirty-seven percent of the high school advanced placement biology examination tests knowledge of evolution, evolutionary biology, and heredity, according to the College Board. Students who o not thoroughly understand evolution cannot hope to succeed on this exam; they will be handicapped in competitive science courses in college and the careers that may follow”. What Mr. Hanle has said is a threat to the nation in two ways.

First, for something to be logical it must be based on truth. Evolution is a lie, therefore, science based on evolution will be illogical, incorrect and the results will be flawed. Secondly, the freedom and liberty we enjoy here in the United States of America come directly from the Lord Jesus Christ who is the Creator. As the signors of the Declaration of Independence wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” do not come from evolution. However, the opposite, the lack of rights, tyranny and misery do come as a result of belief in and acceptance of evolution.

Belief in evolution sets America up for error in judgment.

  1. Wow, you really don't know anything about evolution, either that or you are just plain dishonest. You also seem to know exactly nothing about biology or science as a whole. Your lack of understanding of biology shows when you make statements like "Mutations are normally harmful to the plant or animal in which it takes place." Well actually most mutations are neutral, as most mutations are point mutations, a change in a single base pair which usually leads to the codon where that base pair was at still coding for the same amino acid. If it does lead to coding of a different amino acid then the protien coded for in the end is slightly different, and depending on the mutation this can be neutral, positive, or negative. For example when only one mutant allele for sickle cell anemia is present the subject has no problems as would be seen in a person with two copies of the mutant allele, but they are immune to malaria. Another example is just a minor mutation that exists in 1% of persons of European ancestory and a similar ratio of persons of African ancestory who have been in either Europe or the Americas for many generations, it has no negative effect, but those with this mutation are resistant to Bubonic Plague, HIV, and some other viral infections. One minor change in a protein makes it extremely difficult for some viruses to actually latch on and later enter cells of persons with this mutation. You also make claims that because evolution is unprovable it is unscientific and earlier you claim your specific deity is scientific even though your belief in a deity is based on faith, so there is a major contradiction there, but even so science doesn't prove anything, and theories by their very nature can't be proven. Theories are explainations based on evidence. There are many theories that have been confirmed over and over again and many that have been disproven. You also claim that evolution has no scientific basis, well then do you have a better explaination for shared endogenous retroviruses (ERVs.) We know the only way two organisms can share an ERV is if they share a common ancestor, since genetic changes caused by retroviral infection are not the same from one infected organism to another. Just the existence of shared ERVs confirms that many species share a common ancestory. Similar mtDNA also indicates a common ancestory for all eukaryotic life. Evolution, which is defined more or less as the change in allele frequency in a population from one generation to the next, occurs constantly, even speciation has been observed in a lab and documented in nature. Playing the martyr card doesn't work very well either when claiming that people who don't believe in evolution will be persecuted and not get jobs, the problem is students who don't understand science won't get hired as scientists. Just claiming "Goddidit" doesn't really explain much. For instance it doesn't explain shared ERVs, similar mtDNA, observed instances of speciation and etc. If you relied on "Goddidit" as an explaination epilpeptics would have holes drilled in their head or would have exorcisms done instead of being put on anticonvulsants. Hell they used to drill holes in people's heads for fevers, now we take tylenol or ibuprofen to lower the fever, because we don't say "demons caused the fever, drill a hole to let them out" we say "oh you probably have an infection of some type, and since its most likely viral take some tylenol so you are comfortable." As you can tell by now Bronze age mythology is far from being scientific. Of course since you don't accept evolution I suggest you never take any other anti-biotic aside from penicillin since there is no way bacteria could have evolved a resistance to it. Might as well not use DEET in mosquito repellent either, since there is no way they are more tolerant to the older repellent chemicals. You also might as well protest the use of chimps in lab tests, since there is no way you could have something in common with one, and it is just mean to keep them caged up all day, hell you wouldn't even do that do your dog so why do it to chimp? You might also suggest to ochard owners that they use cheaper, more well tested, chemicals to kill the fruit flies so that fruit is safer and cheaper, sind fruit flies couldn't have gotten any more resistant to chemicals. Nah that couldn't happen. I suppose that mice are just resistant to radiation already, since the ones around Chernyobl are now breeding like crazy, no way they got that way through a few generations of those few that were resistant breeding more frequently than those that weren't.

Another error in your post is your statement that the forefathers relied on Divine help...well since most of them were deists they would have not relied on Divine help and would have even believed a deity wouldn't help them. Deists believe a deity set the universe in motion and then said "Ok I'm done..I'm not going to mess with this anymore." It doesn't really make sense to suggest deists would rely on divine help...does it?
