The President Vetoes the SCHIP Legislation

Yesterday, the President vetoed the legislation that would have expanded government healthcare. Regardless of whether the Dems or the Repubs control the Congress, it seems like the only time he does something right is when he uses his veto pen.

I heard Senator Kennedy barking about horrible this veto is. The liberals are crying about children losing their healthcare. We are talking about families of four making up to $60,000 per year (I have heard some people say $81,000 per year). The news media is saying that 70% of Americans want this government handout. If this is really true, what are they thinking?

First of all, the money that the government is using to fund these programs is not theirs to give away. It’s your money! This is just as much stealing as if you were to rob a bank to pay for someone’s healthcare, even if they are making $0 per year. I don’t want children to lack good healthcare, but I am not in favor of using immoral means to bring this about. I favor the use of charitable funds to help children in needy families, rather than pointing a gun at people’s heads saying that you will go to jail if you don’t pay this extra tax to help these people.

The Bible says, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God laves a cheerful giver.” (II Corinthians 9:7)

It is also good that each giver can decide who needs their charity the most. One might, with good reason, be reluctant to give money to a family if they are not willing to follow God’s provision for a healthy life.

You have a skewed view of reality if you think taxes are immoral, especially since you probably use plenty of the services that taxation provides you, regardless of your religious belief.

  2. Not all taxes are immoral. God gives governments the right to use taxes to enforce laws and punish the wicked (read Romans 13). It is also reasonable for people to be required to pay taxes when they(and not somebody else) receives services for the tax they pay. Requiring people to pay gasoline taxes for road improvements, for example, is not stealing. If this is not true, then how close to Communism to you have to get before it becomes immoral?
