New Citizenship Test

Can you pass the test?

According to an online
AOL article, Federal immigration authorities on Friday 9/29 unveiled 100 new questions immigrants will have to study to pass a civics test to become naturalized American citizens.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS

Here are the questions released by the press. The questions are an interesting test for non-citizens as well as for citizens to test our knowledge of American government and history. Honestly, I misread a couple of question and only got 7 out of 10. From reading the article 60% is passing.

1. Who is in charge of the executive branch?
2. Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?
3. Name one of the two longest rivers in the United States
4. How many justices are on the Supreme Court?
5. What is the name of the Speaker of the House of Representatives now?
6. Name the U.S. war between the North and the South
7. Why does the flag have 13 stripes?
8. Name one U.S. territory
9. What did Susan B. Anthony do?
10. Who was president during World War I?

COMMENTARY

One especially troublesome comment made in the article quoted above was the fact that immigration officials made the insulting remark that the new test was a deliberate attempt to “move way from civics trivia to emphasize basic concepts about the structure of government and American history and geography.” One piece of “civics trivia” was Patrick Henry’s famous “Give me liberty or give me death.” Instead the would-be citizen will need to know that Nancy “I am the most powerful woman in the world” Pelosi is the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ironically, you could not have two more polar opposites. One a true patriot and key Founding Father, and the other a true traitor and another Domestic Terrorist. What is wrong with the Bush administration for permitting such continued denigration of American values, principles, and American history by "eliminating" Patriot Henry and elevating Traitor Pelosi?

IMMIGRATION FACTS & FIGURES

This same article listed some interesting facts about immigration.

1. There are (at least) 12 million illegal aliens in the USA.
2. 850,000 illegal aliens enter the US each year (slightly less that the 1 million + babies murdered each year through abortions).
3. 2.3 million citizens became naturalized US citizens between 2000 and 2003
4. 5% is the number of US jobs held by illegal aliens
5. 25% is the estimated portion of farm jobs held by illegals
6. 17% is the estimate of office and house cleaning jobs held by illegals
7. 14% is the estimate of construction jobs held by illegal aliens
8. 12% is the estimate of food service jobs held by illegals

I was very glad to hear that another back door to amnesty (the nightmarish DREAM Act) was closed for now. Immigration is a big problem which Congress refuses to deal with. We need a new Congress. Let's clean up and out the House and the Senate in '08! Congress has an approval rating of 11%, which is atrocious, but accurately reflects their miserable job performance.

TAKE ACTION

Learn more about American history. Learn as much as you can about the candidates. Look at what they do (their voting record on the issues) more than what the say.

  1. I think the test should contain more questions about the laws of our land. Cultural misunderstanding can lead to unintentional violations of the law by new immigrants. Unfortunately, our laws have gotten to be so unnecessarily complicated (e.g. paying income tax) and they are so inconsistently enforced, that this is a big problem for even for life long residents.
