Boycott Communist China's Olympics

I picked up a newspaper here in Spokane, Washington, were I have been vacationing and was impressed with this cartoon on the editorial page. The cartoon speaks volumes.

A Pat Oliphant cartoon, Wednesday 4/2/08 on Yahoo News

The U.S.A. and other free nations should boycott the Summer Olympics because of the gross persecution that the Chinese daily perpetrate in their nation. The Chinese are crushing freedom of speech in Tibet. The Chinese are experts at torture. America's minimal use of water boarding on a few known terrorists is child's play in terms of torture committed daily on Christians and other "enemies" of the socialist state of the People's Republic of China. We should organize an alternative and call them the Freedom Games for all nations who represent freedom such as the United States. The Red Chinese are the new Nazis and perhaps even worse. As bad as we might be in some areas of rights we are no comparison with the wanton wilful rights violators, the communist Chinese.

Boycotting the Olympic games will prove nothing to China. And it's not fair to the men and women, regardless of their country, or their countries beliefs to miss out on something that they have worked hard and earned the right to compete in.

Instead, I'll watch the Olympics and cheer for my fellow Americans.

    Thanks for your comments.

Sometimes there are more important things than sports. China's gross inhunmanity to men and women should be condemned by the USA and other free nations.

Very true. There are more important things than sports. But again, boycotting the Olympics isn't going to change China's beliefs. The Chinese have been killing female children and 2nd and 3rd borns forever. And the way they raise children (or don't raise them) is up to them. US and possibly a few other countries deciding not to go to the Olympics isn't going to make China re-think their population control program. There are much better ways to go about this, then boycotting the Olympics.

I want you to understand that I don't approve of the Chinese treatment of humans obviously, but I just feel that boycotting is the wrong way to fix the problem.

  4. The Olympic Games are full of corruption--doping and judges being paid off. Marion Jones and others have later had their medals taken away from them. So when you see an event, you don't know who the winner really is even after its over. All the excitement has been taken from the Games. That's the REAL reason to boycott the Olympics.

So Matt, you are going to boycott the games because a few choice athletes have made some wrong decisions about improving their performance? As an Age Group triathlete, I know one person personally who is going to Beijing to represent America. And in no way does he use anything, steroids, or otherwise, to improve his performance. And neither does the majority of athletes. Unlike you, I am still proud of my country.
