War! Lyrics & Hysterics

Fellow AGC blogger, Matt, offered the following comment in response to my article, “Winning, Not Whining” about winning the war on terror in Iraq and elsewhere, “I guess I am a "traitorous promoter of outright surrender". I think that we should pull out. Before the war in Iraq, Iran and Iraq were at war with each other. They were keeping each other in check. Now we have two problems.”

Your comments reminded me of a 1970 number 1 hit song by Edwin Starr called “War”. Here are just a few lyric excerpts.

War

. . .

War! Whoa, Lord

What is it good for

Absolutely nothing

Listen to me…

Ohhh… War! I despise

Because it means destruction’

Of innocent lives

War means tears

to thousands of mothers’ eyes

When their sons go to fight

and lose their lives

. . .

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker

War! Friend only to the undertaker

War! It’s an enemy to all mankind

The thought of war blows my mind

. . .

Well, Matt, it seems as if Edwin Starr, who was apparently protesting the Vietnam War in these lyrics, would probably agree with you today, also. My position on the War on Terrorism in Iraq and elsewhere is we are in it, let’s win it. Right or wrong, and I believe that President Bush was right and made a decision and took action in response to what the Islamic terrorists did to the U.S. on 9/11. With the information he had he tried to work to the worthless, ineffective and corrupt U.N. with its endless meaningless resolutions, ineffective sanctions and fruitless diplomacy.
.
I am not God and am not privy to the actual intelligence with which President Bush had or the circumstances and all the facts surrounding the decision.
.
Fellow AGC blogger Sam points out that (1) Saddam fit the description of one who built his town in blood, (2) God uses kings to carry out His anger (Ps. 110:5) and (3) Saddam himself was a terrorist paying others a bounty of $25,000 for killing Jews. Saddam also had weapons of mass destruction, many of which were hidden in Syria, Iran and Russia during the time we were waiting for sanctions to work. God also says he who blesses Israel will be blessed by God. America does well to supporting Israel.
.
I do know that once a decision to go to war is made second guessing is of no value in seeking the goal, victory. It is much easier to second guess than to take a stand and to persevere when many disagree and work against the effort. Ronald Reagan persisted even in the face of his trusted speechwriters who did not want him to say, 'Mr. Gorbachev, tear down these walls”. Had he listened the former Soviet Union would still be in existence instead of Russian President Vladimir Putin expending energy and effort in just putting part of “the evil empire” back together.

If we pull out of Iraq today, without a complete victory, we will be shooting ourselves in the foot, literally and figuratively. Islamic terrorists will have no buffer between us and LA or NY. I do not agree with much of what the now apparent pseudo Conservative pseudo Christian Bush has done in the last six years, but I believe with the commitment of resources and lives that have now been invested, we must do everything we can to establish an Iraq that is strong enough to stand on its own to resist the threat from Iran and Syria and other Islamic terrorist regimes or groups.
.
Like it or not things seem to be coming together for an all out end of the world scenario. China, Russia and the Islam against Israel. You know I really couldn't say for sure which side Pelosi, Clinton or any other Democratic leaders will be on in the end. It will probably be God and Israel against the World. I will put my money on God and Israel!

  1. You yourself have called Islam "a religion of hatred". How can you expect Iraq to become a stable, peaceable nation if most of the people are Muslims? It is a lost cause for sure. Evangelism is the only hope for the world, not pragmatic millitary action. I am not an absolute pacifist. The U.S. government has a biblical obligation to apprehend those who have committed crimes against the U.S. (but not any other nation including Israel). The only good way to bless Israel is to evangelize it. Trying to police the whole world of all terrorism (in exchange for sovereignty) will be the platform that the Beast will likely use to come to power.
