Religious Yardstick

Alan Fram of the Houston Chronicle reported that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York are perceived by the public in a recent survey as the least religious candidate running in the current Presidential election. Fram was reporting the results of the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. The survey also identified Governor Mitt Romney as the most religious, but his Mormonism will hurt him with voters.

Apparently the survey or poll dealt primarily with the major 3 Democrat Party Candidates and the 3 top tier GOP candidates. It would also be interesting to see what people mean by "religious". One definition of "religious" is:

re·li·gious adj.

1. Having or showing belief in and reverence for God or a deity.
2. Of, concerned with, or teaching religion: a religious text.
3. Extremely scrupulous or conscientious: religious devotion to duty.

With their vehement stand for abortion and homosexuality Senator Clinton or Mayor Giuliani certainly have no demonstrative reverence or respect for God or for God's Biblical standards. Clinton's apparent lack of scruples in her dealings with Whitewater and many other questionable dealings with her enemies further demonstrate lack of a true faith. I see none of the top media ordained and blessed "top" candidates as being in the least bit interested in true conservative or true Christian beliefs or principles. Though all to some degree fake such belief to only garner votes, perhaps in the same fashion that President Bush had done.

Fram relates that seven in ten in the nonpartisan Pew Research Center poll said they believe it is important for a president to have strong religious beliefs, including broad majorities of both parties. Looking at the "top" six none of them demonstrate that they are true Christians in any sense of the word from a purely Biblical standpoint. Each may be religious to some degree, but none demonstrate by their life, behavior or positions that they are true consistent Christians.

In Fram's article he quotes a spokesman for Senator Clinton, Phil Singer, as saying, "There are many things about Senator Clinton that people don't know and one of those things is that she is a person of faith." "Faith in what?", would be my question. Faith in herself, in Karl Marx, in Mother Earth, faith in secular humanism, faith in socialism, faith in anything but the true God of Creation would be my assessment.

I do believe that faith is a key ingredient in the character and qualifications of a presidential candidate. None of the current "top" six currently meet that expectation. You have to skip over all of the Democrat Party candidates and dip into the press defined second-tier GOP candidates to find qualified candidates based on their character and convictions. I agree with the Biblical assessment, "And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him." This is the single most important qualifier to be an effective and God-blessed President. That is why as of right now I am leaning on Representative Duncan Hunter, Governor Mike Huckabee and Senator Sam Brownback as my choice for President.
