Baseball, Apple Pie & Mom

Roger Clemens and His Mom Bess

.
Motherhood is still a value and a virtue for most Americans. Motherhood is American more so than apple pie or even baseball. Today is we celebrate Mother’s Day; it also signifies the beginning of National Nursing Home Week. Some of our mothers live in distant places. Some of our mother’s reside and are being cared for in nursing homes because of age, disability, infirmity or a decline in health to such an extent that they can no longer be independent in some aspect(s) of their activities of daily living. Some of our mothers, like mine, have passed away. Some may live next door or in the next room . . .

It is always good to stop and reflect and honor their memory and to appreciate their love, their sacrifices, their sustenance, their protection, their devotion, their concern and their presence, past or present and even if only in our fleeting memory.

A Glimpse of My Mom

Modest is an old fashioned word from a bygone era, she never wore pants, always wore a dress even if tattered or torn yet always exemplified real femininity as our Creator intended.

One-of a-kind humor, quick, witty, subtle and sarcastic.

Tragedy and trauma– coping in her own way when struck with the loss of her youngest child to cancer and her own heart stoppage and its aftermath.

Helpful attitude toward others – visiting and caring for sick and dying friends, relatives and neighbors

Enthusiasm for life and words. No one was ever a stranger – “How tall are you?” - she would innocently, curiously ask a fellow shopper in the check out line or make a cutting or comic observation of a characteristic or idiosyncrasy in someone most would never notice or be too reserved to comment. Enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and learning new words and every now and then one would come from out of left field. We would be in awe and wonder and look for a dictionary . . .

Religious conviction was deep and personal.

Thanks mom. Thank You, Heavenly Father, for the memories, the life, the love and the example of the mother and father you provided me . . .
