Facing the Giants (2006)

If ever there was a movie that depicted positive, God-honoring, conservative and traditional American values it is the movie, Facing the Giants. I rented the movie from the local video store this past weekend. The movie epitomizes a pro-morality, pro-family cuture and pro-Judeo-Christian values and principles. This is a family movie, an inspirational movie, a good sports movie, and watching it is an edifying entertaining experience. It demonstrates the practical application or outworking of true Christianity to real life situations. It is a 21st century parable that one could easily imagine Jesus Christ sharing with His closest followers.

The basic plot of the movie follows a private Christian High School football coach’s attempt to transform a losing team into a winner. The movie captures real life struggles of the coach in his personal life as well as in his professional life. It shows his trials and triumphs. It shows his low points and his high points. The coach comes to the realization that his personal God demands something from him – brokenness. In the movie we see how the coach faces failure and frustration and the role that the Lord Jesus Christ plays in his life.

The movie was well done. The movie was the not made in Hollywood. It was made by a church. There were no million-dollar movie idols in the cast. The story was powerful, practical and penetrating. For anyone who wants to get a feel of what real Christianity looks like this is the movie to see. For a true believer the movie challenges the status-quo showing how God can work in an individual’s life, in a family and in an organization.

The box office receipts totaled over $10 million. My two dollars and seventy-six cents added to the rental receipts. I read on one of the on-line movie review websites that any profit from the movie will be used to build a youth center in Georgia.

Quality movie fare is rare, but is still available. However, a person must seek it out and must reject probably 1000 substandard shameful, godless futile filth-filled movies to find one good one of such overall excellence as Facing the Giants. Everyone faces giants in their lives at one time or another. Learn how one ordinary man copes with the multiple personal and professional challenges. I highly recommend this film to both the true Christian believer and the non-believer (everyone else) to either rent or purchase. This film is A Good Choice in which to invest one's time and treasure.
