I came across the following letter to the editor on the Marysville, California Appeal-Democrat.com website. I have included the letter and my response, which I also posted on the website.
MR. KOFFMAN'S LETTER
"Cast your ballot against Prop 8"
September 07, 2008 12:03:00 AM
"The judiciary, executive, and legislative branches of our government have a long history of rulings and legislation that time tests. The good remain, the bad are overturned.
[Congress] "In 1787 the United States Constitution was ratified. It counted each slave as three-fifths of a person, and gave them no legal protections. In 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation effectively ended slavery.
[Congress] "In 1920 the Eighteenth Amendment was ratified and prohibited the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol. It was repealed in 1933.
[Congress] "In 1924 the Virginia Legislature enacted The Racial Integrity Act. It became a felony for white and non-white persons to marry. The law was overturned by the United States Supreme Court in 1967.
[President] "In 1942 more than 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry were forcibly moved to "War Relocation Camps." In 1988 Congress apologized for the internment.
[Congress] "In 1964 the Civil Rights Act made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal.
[Congress] "In 1990 The Americans with Disabilities Act became law. It prohibits discrimination based on disabilities.
[Judiciary] "In 2008 the California Supreme Court ruled that a law defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman is contrary to the California Constitution's anti-discrimination clause.
"Be part of the fourth branch of government; the electorate. In November we have an opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment that will deny equal civil rights to part of our citizenry. Vote no on Proposition 8, a measure that eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry."
Michael Koffman,

MY COMMENT
Why Californians should vote YES on Proposition 8
Mr. Koffman you forgot two other tyrannical court “ruinings” that also became “law.”
[JUDICIARY] In 1973 the United States Supreme Court ruled that women had the unfettered right to murder their unborn children. Far worse than slavery, murdering an innocent baby is much more hideous and heinous than slavery. Despite 35 years of protest by advocates of pro-life the Democratic Party and its axis of evil – the billion dollar Planned Parenthood Federation of America, NARAL, NOW, the NEA, the United Church of Christ, et al have actively supported this great injustice. When will this awful ruling be overturned?
[JUDICIARY] In 2003 the United States Supreme Court struck down the sodomy law in Lawrence v. Texas. In essence, the tyrannical court blessed the unnatural, unhealthy, immoral and abnormal practice of homosexual behavior. Thus, it lead to the opening up the recent mischief perpetrated by the California Supreme Court decision of 2008 in contending that the exclusivity of one-man, one-woman marriage was unconstitutional. Sodomy is still wrong in the eyes of God and all sound reason.
First, the courts were designed to interpret the law, not to change or make new laws. It is not within the prerogative of the court to make laws. Only the Legislature should be making or changing the laws. The court has overstepped its bounds in California and in Washington D.C.
Second, how a person acts or behaves is no basis for a claim to special “civil” rights, priveleges or protections of law. Protecting homosexual behavior is like protecting someone who chooses to steal, or someone who wants to prostitute himself or herself, or someone who wants to murder. All of these are behaviors that societies have held to be unacceptable. It is not prejudicial, but common sense. That is why laws were created. They exist to protect society. The following is not politically correct, but it is truthful. Homosexual behavior is harmful and destructive to society – physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
Vote YES on Proposition 8 and support www.ProtectMarriage.com!
