Targeting Terrorists

The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch newspaper runs a regular feature in their newspaper identifying an important issue to the local community. Occasionally I will respond and comment on the issue raised, as I did to Thursday's question.

The Hot Issue: Should the FBI be allowed to pursue terror investigations based on profiles rather than evidence?

My Response: Yes, absolutely.

Why not do both, conduct investigations based on profiles and based on evidence? A basic terrorist profile should be developed and followed. Great energy and concern should be given to all suspicious characters.

Randomly sample other suspects, who do not necessarily fit the terrorist profile, and investigate as necessary them if there is evidence.

However, if 99% of the all terrorists are Muslim-background individuals, foreigners from the Middle East, wouldn’t it be logical to create a profile going after all of those people rather than shaking down and hassling every 80 year-old grandmother at our airports? The profile would be the starting point. If evidence is discovered, then those individuals should be detained, investigated, arrested or deported.

Leftist political correct foolishness is running rampant in our nation. Political correctness actually substitutes for common sense. Diversity is valued more than individual freedom.

  1. I agree with this as long the rights of the suspects or the targets of the investigations are not violated. This would include protections against unreasonable searches and seizures, the right to an attorney, right to a speedy trial by jury, and all other constituitonal rights.
